Ive been puzzled by this for some time now and have asked many and did a few searches on the net but to no avail....Can anyone help me out???

Are you seriously asking this? Just wondering if you would like for me to take down my medical book to get into "detail" about it lol, Well besides "those" reasons, they are rather fun to play with aren't they?

I'm told that, given enough stimulation, men can lactate.  So perhaps it's to take care of the babies while the women are out killing dinner?

I'd like to know a medical or biological professional's take on this. Could it be that sometime in human (or primate) history that both sexes lactated?

My girlfriend and I were wondering why men have nipples. It seems to be the only body part that doesn't serve a purpose. On females the purpose is obvious, but on males they just seem to be ornamentation.


Males and females, though very different, have a great deal in common. In the earliest part of our embryonic development, we all start out much the same. Though the sex of an embryo is determined when sperm meets egg, the genital anatomy of males and females cannot be visually distinguished with the use of ultrasound until the 15th week of pregnancy.


From the beginning, we all have the tissues that later develop into functioning parts, depending on whether we are genetically coded to be male or female. (The genetic coding that leads to people who have both male and female anatomical traits is much more complex than we'll get into here.)


Males have nipples because they develop with the capacity to be female should their chromosomes dictate. Females call upon this capacity when they hit puberty and their breasts develop. Later, if they become pregnant, they call upon it again as milk is created in their breasts. Generally, males do not have a reason for the nipple to function, although, from time to time, adolescent and adult males develop a condition called gynecomastia, in which hormonal levels fool the breasts into beginning to develop.


But for the most part, nipples are on men's chests not for ornamentation, but because we all initially originate from the same kinds of tissues. Males just don't need their breast tissue to be a functioning part of their anatomy.

There are a lot of things that men and women share that are not thought of often as sex organs or physical attributes. For example the female clitoris that is similar to the male phallus and which is enriched with more nerve endings than a male's penis.

One of my favorite diseases is TSF or testicular feminization syndrome where genetically the individual is male but morphologically the individual appears female. Usually the testes must be surgically removed before puberty kicks into full swing, as they will become cancerous. There is a famous celebrity with this syndrome, but I am not able to divulge that info. Here. Ask some of your friends physicians and they will tell you.

Also all of the mother's mitochondrial DNA is 100% donated to the male child. Sometimes I like to think about this that some men are more like their mother, its a fun concept to toy with.  

What really determines sex is not really all that black and white. Yes it is XX and Xy chromosomes but more importantly it is also the size of the nuclei in your hypothalamus and the feedback to your sex organs, your environment, and what you believe. It’s wonderful to see a good blending of both male and female in an individual. For example a  sensitive and emotional man, or a strong assertive tall woman, a man who has a wonderful singing voice, or a woman that can rock climb with one hand. Actually I find it fascinating to see what attracts an individual to a lover. Is it something that they lack and desire to have within them or is it a complement to their self-identity? And you think I am just there to get my rocks off when I open the door. Ha!

Regarding lactation of men, there was a great story that my physiology teacher told our class that there was this father who had adopted a child who had won a court case that allowed him to breastfeed his child. He was allowed to have an endocrinologist give him injections of oxytocin to facilitate the process and with nipple stimulation he was able to breast feed.  As a single parent, it was important for his child to form an emotional bond to his him in the early stages. Actually if you massage a man's breasts every day it will make them grow. I used to love doing this to an ex-boyfriend, and he knew this and hated it when I tried to stimulate his nipples, so we would end up rolling around play fighting and then having some hot steamy sex.

We are such sexual creatures. Everything we do revolves around procreation and the passing on of our genes. If a man can lactate for his child, then more power to him. Then he posses the capability to raise his child. Men also have hormonal fluctuations as women do. It falls into a rough monthly cycle, and it can be charted. Its about three days of the blues when he doesn't feel so up to par. I always thought a high powered executive should know his cycle so that he can work around it.

If you think about it, at some point in our development males and females are the same.  Then the hormones kick in the males get testicles, and the females get ovaries. Female babies have been born with their clitoris swollen so at first glance she is thought to be a he.
