I have got 5 PMs over the last 10 days. As a basic members, I have no idea of who wants to contact me so urgently. I cannot read or respond. It would be nice if VIP included the right to send a message, have it read, and have the recipient reply to that message but not be otherwise able to send PMs.  
For now a person who sends a message can give one of their VIP days to a recipient but even then the recipient would not know of their promotion from Basic to VIP.

Not an accident that you can’t read  them. It is one of the reasons /incentives for you to obtain VIP. More can be gleaned/ learned with DMs from trusted sources than all the posts and reviews out there.
Not going to see a change.

I am VIP for unpredictable weeks scattered through the year.
So that VIP is writing to an inactive box.  
If a VIPs PM to me turned on my ability to respond to them once but did NOT turn on my ability to send PMs to anyone, then  
1. the value of PMs to VIPs would be Increased AND  
2  I would remain a BASIC punter who could not send PMs to others.

The closest thing I see to anything happening is to get a notice when I would send you one is that you do not presently have VIP.
Their incentive to that would be to entice one to post vs. DM as is reveiws and boards that keep people coming.

I got a message but can’t read it. No clue who even sent it to tell them in thread that I can’t read it. Never encountered this feature in a forum in 20 years on the internet.
