Re: Just avoid using "biweekly" altogether ...

I usually follow the payroll rule to keep them straight, but that's just me.  semi-monthly you get paid two times a month, or 24 times per year.  Bi-weekly you get paid every other week, or 26 times per year.  Usually you can tell what someone means even if they use the wring word.

Personally, I get more worked up when people use words and phrases like:

"Supposably" instead of "supposedly"

"For all intensive purposes" instead of "for all intents and purposes"

And don't even get me started about the practice of using an acronym followed by the last work in the acronym.  For example:

ATM = Automated Teller Machine.  So if you say "ATM Machine" you're really saying "automated teller machine machine"

Same for PIN Number, VIN Number, UPC Code, etc. etc.

Drives me nuts

Just an FYI:

I plan to utilize TER on a bi-weekly basis to post dates & hours of my availability in Minneapolis.  This should help all parties (including myself mostly..lol) to plan:)

Thank you,
Austin :)

because it's inherently confusing: (Grammar Girl is a great site for tough questions.)

"The definition of biweekly is every two weeks, and the definition of semiweekly is twice a week, or said another way, every half week, if that helps you remember. Bimonthly is every two months, and semimonthly is every half month. The Grammar Girl podcast is now coming out semiweekly."

"Avoid Biweekly and Semiweekly
I don't know exactly when the change happened, but I know that it did happen. Every style guide I checked recommended avoiding words such as biweekly and bimonthly and instead just saying twice a week or every other week (1, 2, 3, 4). It's more clear."

Bi-weekly usually means "twice a week"

PS I'm a closet grammar Nazi and have a sensitive tongue from the constant biting.

Definition of biweekly can be either:

1. occurring every two weeks.
2. occurring twice a week; semiweekly.

I usually interpret it as # 2.

Either way, a provider is allowed one ad per week. Twice won't happen, but If she meant every other week, then she is shorting herself.

That's why Grammar Girl suggests avoiding it.  Half the people reading it will get a meaning you didn't intend, even when you get it "right."
