I would imagine lots of business professionals would get a local room, especially if their conference is in the same hotel, if nothing else but to get to the meeting relaxed and refreshed as opposed to fighting traffic early in the morning.

I've never had a raised eyebrow when I've rented a local room. I just don't do it enough to raise an eyebrow.

I think the key is to not use the same hotel to often.  I think it may also be wise to use different chains.  I remember reading about how some high end chains would make notes about customers. This was mainly about things a customer requested or seemed to enjoy, so they could be have things in place the next time the customer checked into that chains hotels.  I could also see them noting other noted activity observed by a customer.

There are hundreds of real reasons someone stays at a hotel locally-painting, new carpet, remodeling, smoke damage at the house, flood in the basement, kids are home, divorce pending,
use of hot tub and pool, etc
