First off, so great to have TER back!

Was the scanning provider boards recently and I thought I saw a site that offered, under their help or tools section, a way that you could hide your actual phone number on text. Does anybody know what I’m talking about, and if so would you be willing to share?

Thanks in advance and feel free to PM me if you like.

And yes, of course I know that one should always have a burner phone for the hobby.
I’m trying to do a workaround as I do not hobby that much, and I only do FBSM which I’m hoping is more UTR for LEA

My workaround is a google voice number.   There are providers who are not comfortable with it for verification, but I am always open that the only number I can use for texting is my Google Voice number.

I would say it has prevented me from meeting up with a handful of ladies so it is not perfect.

A close friend of mine is what I call a legal hacker for government ****. I asked him about certain things for my personal use. He said, "thank Google for that issue."

Most phones now come w/ 2 SIM slots. Get a cheap burner phone, remove its SIM card and insert it into the 2nd SIM slot of your personal phone. Now your personal phone has two numbers, your private number and your hobby number. When you call/text, you can choose if you want to send/call/text from SIM1 or SIM2. This way, you only need to carry one phone, 2-in-1 combo. Just make sure the burner phone has the same SIM type (nano, micro, etc) as your personal phone. Nano fits into Micro slot by using the adpater. Happy hobbying.

I'm an infrequent hobbyist, so GV works for me. Just DON'T use the GV app on your phone--especially and Android. It wants to integrate completely with your phone so you can't tell the difference between your normal phone # and GV #, which is exactly what I'm trying to avoid here. Use a private browser like Frost+ or just use an incognito tab on Chrome or Firefox. It's a little inconvenient to use, but it stays completely separate from your regular phone. As far as I know I haven't been rejected by a provider for using GV.

I've used GV and Gmail for this for as long as they've been available with no issues. I know it's Google and they're busily collecting information, but I figure I'm a small fish in a big sea so I'm relatively safe.

Good luck out there.

I spend approximately $100/year on refilling it, not including the cost of the phone.  I buy a cheaper phone that just has the basic functions I need.  I pay cash for everything.  There's no link between it and my regular phone at all and if something were to happen that made me uncomfortable with using that number, worst case I remove the SIM card and toss it in the garbage at one place and the phone goes in the garbage somewhere else.

I'm sure a lot of you think this is excessive.  So be it but sometimes a little paranoia is a useful thing.

There are also burner apps that are now available for your phone.  Like most things, there are free ones that are ok and ones that cost some money that have more features.  I have one that is disguised as a news app on my phone.  It works pretty well, and actually provides a second real phone # for that app only. I would suggest doing a search for "burner app reviews" if you are interested in this instead of a separate phone.
