1. Ads for providers on sites such as Backpage that have photos that obviously look like they were professionally taken pics of porn stars.
2. Ads or posts anywhere with horrible grammar or goofy symbol language.
3. Provider promises that can't be backed up with reviews
4. Cheap incalls in bad parts of town, unless of course danger is what turns you on.
5. Things that would seem to good to be true to a person with common sense...

For "Sort of a newbie", you've got it down pretty well. Just keep all of that in mind, and you'll do fine.

I'd add frequent name changes by providers and the same phone number for different providers, which could also be a corollary to frequent name changes. Anything else?

this is a good one, on a related note I'd like to add a new one, providers offering 15-30 minute sessions for less that $100.

I'm always amazed when I read reviews of such sessions, which seem to be universally bad. How could someone expect anything other than a "nasty" experience for that amount of time and money?
