Another commonality was being interrogated by the police - some for hours, some for days. I know this has been brought  up previously, but I will reiterate - STFU! (say nothing!). At which time you know there are police involved provide them with your name and address, then tell them you wish to invoke your right to remain silent - even if you have not yet been arrested. There is nothing you can say that will help you, no matter what they "promise" you. Everything you say CAN & WILL be used against you.

Remaining silent may make the difference between conviction and absolution. You will make your attorney's job much easier, which may result in a reduced fee.

One more thing - if, after 15 minutes or 1/2 hour they have not placed you under arrest (they will state so and read you your Miranda rights) ask if you are under arrest or if you are free to go. It is possible that your lack of talking may help you enough wherein they decide they may not have enough of a case against you - depending on what has happened.
