I suspect that somehow the timing of when the bombs went off was screwed up somehow because if they had gone off when the top finishers were crossing the finish line there would have been more people around and thus more casualties.

3 of my running buddies were running the Marathon yesterday. I was watching it live on the internet and tracking their progress during their runs via electronic chip timing. They had all finished more than an hour before the bombings but 1 of them was still near the finish line with their family when the bombs went off. Cell phones were not working in that area either due to overloading or perhaps due to cell phone service being turned off to prevent other bombs being detonated via cell phone.  With FB I was able to verify all three runners and their families were safe within an hour after the bombings..
 

I am so sorry about that.  You must have been really stressed out during that hour and incredibly relieved after.  What an emotional roller coaster!

He met up with his wife after and a bomb went off a block away from him.  The value of facebook: she was able to tell everyone they were OK when the cell service of shut off / got overloaded
