Memorial Day -sincere thoughts

Folks, with Memorial Day today and seeing the nice notes on this board, I’m sharing a plug/recommendation for a movie I recently saw, “Taking Chance”.  It stars Kevin Bacon and was on HBO about a year and a half ago.  Not having HBO I never saw it until just recently on a plane.

This is the true story of Col. Michael Strobl, USMC, who volunteers to escort the remains of PFC Chance Phelps, who was killed in Iraq, to Phelps’ hometown in Wyoming.  Without any blood, guts, war scenes, or anything of that nature, this movie was incredibly scripted, directed, and acted.  From the incredible performance of Kevin Bacon as Col. Strobl, to many other scenes including a grizzled old Marine from WWII who dresses down Strobl and gives insight into Strobl’s role better than any psychologist could, to the baggage handlers at various airports and fellow passengers, to faceless drivers unknown to each other on a remote highway who form an ad hoc funeral procession, this movie will move you unlike any other.  Seriously, at age forty-five I have never cried during a movie regardless of whether true or fiction.  I cried three times in this movie.  It is that powerful.

Watch the trailer and get the movie.  I know you can get it on Netflix and Amazon.  It is nonpolitical and should be required viewing for 10th graders everywhere.

I hope that all readers will join in honoring our troops on this Memorial Day.  As I do on every Memorial Day, and every other holidaqy,I will be visiting a provider to get myself "serviced."  As the poet Rodney once said, "Let's all get laid!"

Although Memorial Day is officially to honor those who died in service to our country, I offer my appreciation to all who have served.
