I've played around on places like backpage casually the last couple of years (sensual massage) and decided to move on to bigger and better by joining both TER and P411.  (Hence the nom de plume)

I am a bit confused and need some advice.  I see terms like newbie friendly, self explanatory, but then I see things like basic +1, or basic +4, and I get confused.  Some of the women I see stating basic + I have also seen on backpage and actually scheduled appointments with without basic, +, or references.  How do I go about determining whom to contact with no history and whom I should actually wait to contact until I aquire an adequate reputation?

Newbie friendly doesn't require as much screening obviously like you said!!
Basic +1 should mean that the lady requires 1 p411 okay from a fellow provider on your profile!!
Basic +4 means 4 okays are required on your profile!!
Basic +10 means 10 okays are required & most of the time. these are the high, high, high up girls or maybe UTR Providers!!

I would be a little cautious about the ladies that don't screen like their p411 profiles are set up like!! Sometimes it means nothing other than the economy right now is hurting everyone!! Or maybe it's a girl heaven forbid that is working with the piggies (I heard of this happening in Chicago when I was out there 2 years ago! I don't know if it has ever happened here or if it was even a true story or just a rumor that I heard while working out in Chicago, way back when!!!) Someone who knows more about p411 then I do, can probably comment on this info factually... because I don't know if my information is 2nd hand false rumors or correct!

Who you see... And when you see them... is all up to you!! Although, a lady has the right to decide if there going to or not going to see you!! Just be polite & don't ever lie or beat around the bush to any girl about anything!! And, more intimate questions are BEST saved for the bedroom unless you have A LOT of okays!! lol. That's my personal thoughts!

As far as who you would like to see or who you should see first, I'd write a list if I were you of all your favorites & must-see's that you want to see & start checking them off as you see them! lol.

You won't necessarily need to have the "adequate reputation" out of the gate. Many providers will have alternate verification methods. Most of the top providers here have a website and clearly outline  the verification process in detail. There are also a few great providers not on the board as well.

Look at TER and P411 ads, providers websites and read read read reviews. When you find someone that piques your interest, already knowing what you can expect from a get together because you did your research, reach out to her through her prefered method of contact. If you use P411, my prefered method, and you don't have enough OKs for her to feel comfortable you may be able to give her what ever info she may need to see you. After your date request an OK from her, every one you get makes things easier the next time. I rarely even look at BP anymore, all the bait and switch and stolen pic ads make it too hard to find the real gems that advertize there. The ads and profile pages mentioned above have more lovely and beautiful women than I can hope to ever meet anyway. The basic+ 1 or 2 just means your basic screening that Gina did when you signed up for P411+ how ever many OKs she likes her new friends to have. As with everything in this world YMMV, you can't win if you don't enter and you will never meet her if you don't try. Good luck, have fun, and be safe but don't over think things.

Make yourself a presence on this board by posting regularly;  ask questions, make comments.  Just don't be an asshole.  Be respectful, but be genuine.  Your post here hits the right note:  you're straightforward, transparent, approachable.  Let your personality show through.  

I can't speak for providers, but I have a hunch that if you establish a cyber-presence and personality, providers will have a sense of who you are, and verification may be easier.

You just have to do what you are already doing, I started over a year ago the same way you are now, started with the massage ladies, after talking to them honestly some of them were willing to provide references for me (see them more then once so you can be comfortable around each other, they will at least vouch that you are not an asshole or LE). do your reviews so you start a history they can research, then you pay attention to who is active on the boards like stated above. engage them, find a lady that you might be interested in through research and reviews, If your like me you spent weeks reading trying to figure out who will be your first, then, talk to her honestly about your situation. Most likely they will get you through it one way or the other, its safest for them. if not, don't take it personal and try the next lady you come across that is interesting. Who you decide to see isn't advice I can give, my Helen of troy may be your Quasimodo. I do say though, if you use backpage, make sure you can cross-reference them here or 411 before you even think of talking to them. What is the difference between basic plus references and basic plus one? Seems to me that a lot of the newbie friendly ones show basic plus references which seems to me to be the same as basic plus whatever number of OKs

Just some tips for newbies that I've picked up through experience and listening to other people:

1.  Check out the newbie board; lots of good info there
2.  Get the VIP membership so you can see the review details and have access to the PM system
3.  Spend some time learning how to use the search functions for both reviews and the discussion board so you can identify ladies you would be interested in seeing based on the criteria that matter most to you (ex: looks, menu, rates, etc.)
4.  Figure out what kind of verification the ladies you would like to see require and how you can meet those requirements.  Some ladies are very particular.  Others are more flexible.  It's OK to contact them about it if you are not sure; just remember to be discreet.  Any  explicit questions will likely get you disconnect or otherwise ignored.
5.  Some ladies advertise here or on other sites that they are newbie friendly; keep an eye out for that.
6.  Consider joining a site such as P411 that pre-screens potential clients.  Some escorts will accept membership in such sites as satisfactory verification.
7.  If you are still puzzled by something after having done research, please feel free to ask questions.  I think for the most part we are willing to help out so long as we think you are not just freeloading on what others have learned.
8.  Develop a bit of a thick skin; some people are going to be jerks regardless.
9.  If an ad or offer looks TGTBT, it's probably TGTBT.
10. If you find yourself in any situation that doesn't feel quite right, trust your instincts and walk away.
11. As a newcomer, stick with well-reviewed ladies.  It's harder when you are inexperienced to figure out who the legit providers are from the fakes and scammers when they don't have reviews.
12.  Google is very useful.  Searching on a phone number or other info from an ad in Google can sometimes save you a lot of grief. Google Image Search is another very useful tool to search for other places where pictures in an ad are being used.
13. To help uncover ads that are using someone else pics Google Image Search and Tineye are useful tools.  Much better to find out ahead of time that the girl you are thinking of calling is using the pics from some porn star or model or that the pics have been used in ads from one side of the country to the other.
14.  Get an anonymous hobby email that is not through your work, school, or anything connected to your real life (yahoo, hotmail, gmail, etc.) and use it for all your hobby email activity and for nothing else.  Be sure you include nothing that identifies who you really are when you create it.
15.  Get a prepaid phone that you use for nothing else other than hobby phone calls and pay cash for it and whatever refill minutes you buy.
