There are a couple of large conventions in town. It is very difficult to find a room. However, cancellations are always part of any convention. Call the hotels directly (avoid using the central reservations line or the Internet) and you might get lucky!

I was looking for a hotel several weeks ago. Okay, that means there are lots of folks in town. Where are you? I have empty places on my dance card. I've been on vacation for almost a month and I'm very ready to be back at work. Man, what a job!! Call it a labor of lust.
