The news media generally does a very poor job on reporting on stories that deal with scientific issues because most of them seldom employ any reporters any longer who know enough about science to be able to ask questions that would show whether or not the claims of people such as the group in this story have any merit.  So, they pretty much print whatever they are told if they can get a headline and make some money.  Accurate reporting is at best secondary.
