Whether you’re in need of a quick Valentine’s date idea or just a date idea, regardless of who it is with, here are some suggestions…
Ice Maze, Stillwater, MN: If you are game for a little drive, the Ice Maze in Stillwater, MN provides some fun in our wintry wonderland. The largest ice maze in the US, they do limit the experience to 100 visitors at a time and they have a bar open for takeout. Dogs can join you but not in the maze itself (they do have people who can dogsit while you're in the maze). Tickets are $15/person
Tilt Pinball Bar: In the ‘70s and ‘80s, pinball machines were staples of bars and arcades. As technology advanced past them, they soon became neglected, relegated to the dusty corners of dive bars. Decades later, the nostalgia of the 1970s and 1980s, like many other things of that time, have made a comeback. The “Latchkey Kids” get to reminisce about their childhood, Gen Z gets a blast from the past, and Millennials gets to really take it all in for the first time. The bar is open, there are limited options for food, and games are $0.50 a piece. Masks are required to be worn inside unless eating or drinking
Top Golf: a bowling alley approach to the game of golf but still a whole lot of fun and the food is surprisingly really good. The bar menu is vast as well since the atmosphere is a bit more of a party, even if you just have a bay for two. Prices vary, depending on how games, drinks, and food choices.
Bad Axe: Got an axe to grind? Although I still haven’t been there myself, friends rave about it! Much like top golf, it’s bowling alley style but with a bit of an edge. You and your date will be as close to a real Northwoods Lumberjack by the end of the night. About $25/person/hour.
Escape Rooms: It may seem odd to want to intentionally lock yourself in with someone for an hour but it really can be a lot of fun. There are several locations across the metro with various themes. The one on my “to do list”? The Harry Potter themed room. Prices vary based on the experience but I suggest booking at least a week in advance.
If you'd rather immerse yourself in nature then, Como Park Zoo is a great date in the summer but can also be a great date for the winter due to the glass enclosures. An honorable mention would be Minnehaha Falls as the 100-foot cascade is gorgeous when frozen.
Minneapolis Institute of Art if you're wanting something more thought provoking. Although the MIA has its staples, some of the current exhibitions include "In the Presence of Our Ancestors: Southern Perspectives in African American Art" and "Intimate Space: A Noblewoman’s Bedroom in Late Imperial China". The MIA is open Thursday - Sunday, 10am - 5pm.
I'm sure there are some lovely providers around that would love to join you out and about! Have fun everyone!
