Looking for a hobby/burner phone... Any suggestions? What is the best way to activate as well?  Already have email account, but should I set up a new one as well?

Can't recommend one service over another, but would recommend that you get the ability to text, the plan has some way of preventing your minutes from expiring and you can assign a password to access the phone and can renew minutes on the phone itself.

When a provider who I used to see got arrested, I immediately disposed of my phone.  If your SO should discover it, ask her to take to recycling.  (a colleague over heard a conversation saying I was going to Best Buy and asked me to put it in their recycle bin.)

the daily charge is as low as 99 cent a day or 1.99 w/text. You have to pick the plan, don't let them give you the monthly plan. And best of all you can activate the phone from the phone.  

Email like yahoo etc ALL record your ISP, aka the street address of the computer your using. You can bypass this by using a free version of a VPN or going to a coffee shop to log onto your email. Or you can pay for hushmail etc.

1. Buy a tracfone for cash.
2. Buy minutes card for cash.
3. Activate it from a pay phone.
4. Turn if off unless your talking on it.

0.99/day * 365 days a year = 361.35/Year
1.99/day * 365 days a year = 726.35/Year

So from $30 to $60 per month for a hobby phone.  There are much cheaper alternatives.  Than paying the equivalent of a 2 hour session to Verizon.

On the other hand, you'll feel screwed either way.

Pageplus running on verizon is the cheap option on an annual basis .
for $80 you get 2000 minutes/text and valid for an year

And never give out your real identity or address; just use an alias if asked for any reason.
