Your post scared me for a minute. Made me wonder if we're related..... but on a recount, I realized I had my dad and 10 uncles who served. Amazing how many guys of that Era served. You must be proud. Thanks to them for their service.
Luckily they all came back alive but mentally, all had issues afterwards. They told me stories that would scare the fuck out of anyone!!!!!!! I was 1 year from being drafted into Vietnam.
My dad in real life drove his Sherman tank over this bridge right after they captured it from the Germans ...
And what is sad and scary is that those are the stories they would tell.... there are so many that they wouldn't tell... war is hell but a necessary evil for freedom to survive because there are many people in this world who want to kill us and destroy our country. I have many friends and a few relatives who served in Nam. Some never talk about it.... I don't ask. Some things I can know (or think I know) without asking. But I can see it in their eyes now and then.
My Father, and my Uncle served in the pacific during WW2. neither one talked about their experiences. Both my Father and his brother, died 2 years apart of each other, in their early fifties.
On another note The opening scene from Saving Private Ryan, when the older Ryan, locates the Headstone of his fallen comrade, Always brings me to tears, His loving family is with him, but they can never fully understand what is felt by their Vet, who has visited his fallen brother in arms.
I have 2 brothers who are vets, and I have a nephew who is a vet, and served in Iraq.
3 of my uncles were in the South Pacific in WWII. The japs took no prisoners so you had to fight to your dying breath they said!
BTW, "ALL" the soldiers from Europe including my Dad where headed on ships to Japan after the April VE day but luckily and thank GOD (or we would not be here now), this happened ...
That scene does hit home, and the reality is, I have 5 brothers, and at the time of my entry into the U.S. Armed forces, ( Army ) both of my older siblings were already in service, one having enlisted, the other drafted, and I enlisted. My Mother was extremely distraught having 3 of her off spring, in service and in or heading to Viet Nam. where the nightly news displayed scenes of death and destruction, and of those aluminum caskets coming back home with the bodies of some many young American service personnel. I actually do belong to a true Band of Brothers, as me and my siblings were all, Airborne paratroopers ! 2 of us, in the very same firing battery !
