A common statement in news articles about the recent troubles is often along the lines of how some providers feel "trapped" in the profession because they don't feel they have any other options.

How many people on this board work a job that isn't their dream, but it was the best available?  How many people keep working at that job even though the job of astronaut exists?

So, you didn't answer "provider" when asked by your high school guidance counselor.  It is unlikely anyone answered "garbage collector" or "cublicle dwelling shit catcher for a sanctimonious, over-inflated boss" either.

Although I actually like my job, we work because we must to live and sometimes it isn't the job we dreamed of.  Providers are no different than most everyone else.

Personally I think the news is referring to the street walkers when they say that statement was made.  I think that most well reviewed girls either have another job or are educated enough to get another job should they so choose.  But I could be wrong

I think most could find a good straight job and be very successful at it.  Many of the organizational skills of managing their provider business, are the same useful abilities needed to run a successful business.  But few careers offer the same financial rewards and freedom as being a professional provider.  

Ladies please correct me if I am wrong.

Yeah, it is same old puritanical rant. I put a quote from the article below.  What is really funny is this is true of the way I feel about my own job:  I often do things I don't like, have to deal cordially with people I don't really care for, and at the end of a day often feel ashamed by the career choice and degraded by my peers and those above me.  

Hmmm... but the I need the money.  I keep it going.  Don't feel bad for me, there are good and bad days and if I am lucky I shield the kids from work and enjoy my free time....  Maybe the officers will come crack down on the workplace and liberate me.... liberate all those who feel trapped by their occupation and spending choices.

While this may be true for women on the street and women pimped out, it would be logical to infer then that sites purported to allow a woman or man to advertise companionship (and thus take out the middle man and the element of the coercion) would go a long way toward ending the sense of obligation to the profession.

Here is the other common myth: most people in the business were in some way abused.  Well statistically, there is some evidence to back a bit of the claim.  However I recall a recent survey that said at least 1 in 5 women have been sexually abused in some fashion in their lifetimes. Given that average, maybe the paper should run a report on abuse, rather than prostitution.  After all, that would mean that a good percentage of women entering the law enforcement field and legal profession were abused.

I kind of questioned that statement as well.

But, I do know: I LUV my job!

I remember reading that also.  I think they have to put that in to justify the time an money they spent over the last year working on the bust.  There not going to quote the girl who says i make $100K a year doing this and love it.  Plus it helps justify f..ing up the lives of the successful businessmen who were seeing these girls.  They spent all this time and money and ruined people lives to "save" the girls. It's a funny story: I was such a bad kid in high school. Shitty grades, skipped school all the time, drank a lot, you know, the usual dumb kid stuff. But I went to a school in the outer 'burbs with a ton of really good kids (my class had 9 valedictorians!!) So compared to them I was extra bad. Of course I still had areas I excelled at, like art and writing, but of course those were overlooked.

The guidance counselor was partial to the overachievers, and he just hated me, and the feeling was mutual. He actually called me "Little Miss Passive-Aggressive" once. I remember him telling me, my senior year, that since my grades weren't good enough to get into college, and since I didn't seem to have any "real skills", I ought to look into factory work. He suggested I get a job at the local refrigerator manufacturing plant!

Hahaha! If only he could see me now, with a 4.0 in school, and making more money a week than he probably does a month, and totally loving my job! Here's to you, Mister B!

You are inferring that you have a 'desk' job.  There is a HUGE difference between the majority of people who hold office type jobs that they really do not care for, for all the reasons you state, and between a 'job' where you are paid to be as intimate with someone as you can ever be.  To pretend that you are their "girlfriend", or whatever role you wish them to play.  You are intimate with people who may revolt you if you see them on the street in passing.

You guys just don't get it, do you?  Sure there may be a few women who actually do like what they do, but the majority would rather do something else, but are trapped by the money.  Do you honestly believe that most of these women here would keep escorting if they had well paying jobs in which they did not have to have sex with strangers?

You can say, but they all post on here that they love what they do......well duh!  One sure fire way to kill your business is to publicly post that you hate your job.

I don't know Remy. Matching in one week what the counselor makes in one month is not chump change.

Average counselor makes around $30K. That equates to $1153 per paycheck or about $2300 per month.

For you to average that in one week, based on your website quoted rates, you would need to book almost 10 clients per week and your yearly gross would be around 80K.

Okay, since you insist on moralizing at us, then listen up. I don't want to be an escort for the rest of my life, no. I have larger goals. That said, I can't think of a better job to put me through college. Unfortunately I don't have Mommy and Daddy's money to fall back on. Your morals may tell you that being intimate with strangers is worse than sitting at a desk for 8 hours answering to a modern-day slave driver in a power tie. Personally, MY morals tell me that I'd rather rot for eternity in the inner circle of hell than take another office job.

Escorting is fun. This job surprises me almost every day, and I thrive on that. I set my own schedule, I have the skills I need to run my own business, I take awesome care of my body and soul, and while every client may not be the most gorgeous man I've ever met, I strive to find something attractive in all of them. I've had a few clients that were, as you so crudely put it, physically "revolting" - sure - but they had the intelligence, personality, and charm to make up for it a hundred fold.

I think, most importantly, it should be noted that I've never been as happy or had such great self-esteem as I do now. An office job could never give me that.

Consider this... Do counselors and psychotherapists actually give a shit about the issues their clients have? Or just because they're getting paid to listen, does that mean that they don't care? Just because a brain surgeon is getting paid to operate, does that mean he doesn't feel a sense of accomplishment about what he does? We all have to get paid for something. It doesn't have to be something we hate.

I don't know about Heidi Fleiss but big time actors and athletes would consider that pay for a day or two.  I'm sure there are plenty of local mortagage bankers and TV people who make a lot more than that; they gotta being making 6 figures at least.

My apologies for implying that a desk job and being an escort had the same pressures and risk.  They don't.  It was an attempt at a joke.  But with that said...

trapped is a relative term and that is the whole point.  A drug addicted is trapped by their addiction.  A poor orphan is trapped by their situation.  The whole point is that there is a big difference between earning good money and working as say a telemarketer.  

If you are in this field and you feel revolted by what you do or endangered, I suggest that you consider many of the support options out there for transitioning careers.  

If you are doing it to support your sick kicks, or keep your house, maybe it is time to re-evaluate your long term situation.

In other words, virtually no one in America is trapped into doing this. This is a fiction created by moralists. The few that are trapped do deserve a helping hand.  These are the ones you see on the street and working dives and in third world countries and rat-hole apartments.... on pinned in by a pimp.

The reality is this: if you prefer a certain lifestyle and you have to do things you don't like to have it, that is called a gilded cage, not a trap.

If this is your only option to put food in your mouth or help your family or put a roof over your head - that is an economic trap.

Well, I just realized I did post a bit hastily.  

I thought about it and discussed it with a friend in the community and concluded that:

Yes, one could get trapped by the money.  Trapped in the sense that if you have been doing it along time, there is no way to switch careers.

Just like being laid off from a desk job, you may find yourself busted, too old to play, etc.  The money is good, but what can you find that was any where close to your former occupation?  This is a tough road.

The other situation is where day in and day out, you find yourself doing something you don't like or are even repulsed by.... but again, no other comparable job comes close to the great pay.  How do you reinvent yourself?  After 12 years of med school, internships and working, you realize proctology was not your field.  

The difference is that a proctologist is respected and can put something on a resume.  While unfortunately due to the double standard and puritanical, moralistic attitudes towards the field, you can't have a reference.

And this, folks, points again to why criminalizing what a person does in private is what creates "the trap".  And that was my real point, not to compare escorting to a desk job in a real way.  It was to question the argument of advanced by the folks who sent a good person into a bad spotlight.

I think it is silly to lump all providers in the same "abused and used" category as the newspaper articles are doing.  

However, even if a provider is only working because she doesn't know what else to do and feels "trapped" in the profession, it is generally no different than millions of other people who are not working in their preferred field of endeavor, but do so out of necessity.

But 80k/year is a huge salary for most. Many make about 1/2 that or even less.
