My hobby gmail account was hacked and deleted a couple weeks ago, and I'm just wondering if anyone else has ever had this happen?
My password was cryptic and strong. Apparently Google has a new feature to use a mobile phone to secure an account on each device, which tells me this isn't a rare problem. Google says phishing and weak passwords are the problem, but I know I didn't have these issues.
I now use the phone to approve any changes to gmail. When I got hacked they got my gmail account, AT&T account and Facebook. Fixing them was near impossible as they had new passwords and new verification questions. They also buried a pointer in one to send all emails to a new account even after I got it fixed.
They never did get my bank account info, which is what one company told me that they were looking for. It is a major PIA to repair this stuff.
I didn't have any ties to anything associated with the account.
Right after it happened I did a Google for "hack Gmail" and I was shocked at how much junk is out there to accomplish the task. On closer inspection, most of it will just recover a password if you have IE set to store passwords. I tightened up all my accounts. Play safe!!
