Below are the most recent estimated stats for the 7 county metro twin cities market.  Some interesting numbers that come out of this:

- In any given year 17% of adult males in the twin cities will see a professional service provider.  The raw numbers below indicate this number to be 23%, but it has been adjusted to account for overlap such as clients who see a provider from more than one group per month.  Personally I think both of these numbers are high, but these are what the data indicate.

- An estimated 73% of adult males in the twin cities have or will see a provider at least once in their life.

- 1.9% of adult males in the twin cities see a provider at least once per month and 11% see a provider at least once per quarter.

- Total annual market est. to be $102mm (not including non-professional) in 2001.

- A change in laws would result in a significant increase in market size (demand) with a majority of this coming from out of state clients, mostly those attending conventions.  Convention planners at the nations largest and 3rd largest planning agencies estimated that the twin cities would see an increase in convention business of approx 42% if laws were relaxed.

The raw stats:

Where did this data come from?

And why do you think the percentages are overstated?

The data have been collected from various sources, mostly discussions with providers and clients both in person and on this and various other boards.  It's pretty informal and wouldn't pass any kind of scientific stats class, but is believed to be relatively accurate.  If anything I think the numbers of providers in all groups are probably low.

On your second question - gut feel.  If I think about any group of 100 guys I find it difficult to believe that about 20 of them see a provider at least once a year.  Same goes for believing that 2 out of every 10 guys does.  I could be way off and there have been more than a few occasions where data were correct and my gut was off.

In all cases the data need to pass the smell test.  Folks on this board are in the best position to offer an opinion on wheather the data are close or not.
