I started this hobby in 1991 and went to several of these parlors before they were all closed down in 1997.
My favorites were the Emporium (East St Paul), Le Lenore's and East Lake Health (36th & Lake). I remember the LE check, "make me comfortable." The first time I went to the Emporium the girl told me that and I had no idea what she meant. I eventually figured it out. I saw her several times at the parlor and after she became an indy. We would also have a good laugh about how clueless I was the first time I saw her. I liked the parlors, they were very easy. You could make an appointment, but you could also just show up. The only limits on the menu was the amount of money you were willing to spend. In the current AMPs it is almost impossible to get over L1 service. In some you won't even get that. How to believe there were once 36 or so of these establishments between the 2 cities.
Sure i remember the sauna, and massage places. Hit or miss whether you got laid or not, same as now.Back then, you either called a service, bunny hutch etc. Found a street walker, or maybe certain horel bars, ask a bartender, cab driver, or maybe they would solicit you in the bar.
my 2 favs were on Cedar (Relax a lounge?) and another I can't recall next to the 4 5's VFW in Richfield. Always a great lineup and you weren't looking thru steel bars in a door window. Yes, I remember the Massage Parlors. She was the Madam who operated Cosmos in St.Paul and the Relax A Lounge in Minneapolis, NOT the Emporium. There is a great article in the NY Times from 1991 where Rebecca Rand had lunch with St.Paul Mayor Jim Scheibel,it also offers a brief history of Massage Parlors in the Twin Cities. Ferris Alexander owned the famous Faust theater on University Avenue in St. Paul. He also opened Deja Vu in Minneapolis. He was the first person convicted of pornography charges federally. I think all the Massage Parlors closed in 1996.
Yep, the Relax A Lounge on Cedar was great fun. First time I ever met a "pro". Walk in and there were usually 5-10 nice (some great) looking ladies waiting in the lounge and you picked whichever caught your eye. Had a few lackluster sessions and a few that were fantastic. Similar experience at the Cosmo. Also liked The Belmont (strip club), on University and Dale, next to the Faust. I was young enough that I could drink all night and still be primed to go. Where was that on 7th St ?. Do you know if the building is still there or was it part of the group of buildings that where tore down back behind the bars and hotel adjacent to the Xcel.
PBL was on the west side of 7th street. This is a guess but I'd say it was probably 8-9 blocks south of the Xcel. A rusty brown building on the south west corner of the block? That's pretty much how I recall.
