It appears that the vast majority of the posters here hate aliases. How about we make a pact to absolutely ignore any posts by an alias. No response what-so-ever.
I have to be the 1st to admit I have responded unnecessarily to Aliases & then kicked myself only to catch myself doing it again shortly there after. Perhaps agreeing to a public contract is exactly the remedy to make myself refrain from feeding the Trolls. Thanks Bosco! You rock!
You must not lead him astray for the heavens will be upon thrust you. The devil is but the gleam in your eyes, the temptress to the likes of the weak that grace your doorway to be seduced by your evil ways.
Now for you my child, 55 Hail Marys and 85 Our Fathers.
Oh yes, please come back to confession, it's the most action I get around here.
Well I think I could bend the rules a bit and indulge you with the corporal punishment to your button as long as it is with not instead of. It is my vocation to forgive the sinners and I have an obligation to bring you into my house.
By the way, you pledged above not to respond to alias, think about it, 10 more spankings oooo Hail Marys my child.
I must see my Bishop, I have sinned in my thoughts and my desires. I need to confess this, he will send me to the rectory for months. What have you done to me, I have seen the Devil and her hearts on fire, Oh my dear Father what have I done? I know you for who you are.... I have seen your eyes.
People are the problem. People, that is, who have figured out that, using an alias, they can say any obnoxious, cruel, random, and shitty thing they like with no repercussions whatsoever. So they do.
Admin has listed nine acceptable reasons for using an alias.
Note the emphasis on innocuous, philanthropic, and helpful behavior, and/or protecting the author or others from embarrassment. None of those reasons encompasses calling someone a drunk; denigrating them for asking a question; or otherwise taking cheap, unwarranted shots that the author would be ashamed to say in person.
But, the only punishment listed for abusing an alias is flipping to expose the posters real TER ID. Flipping can't be done by the Mods, only by Admin, and from the guidelines "Flipping an alias is an action of last resort and will only be done if Admin determines that other corrective actions are insufficient due to the nature of the comments in the post." Of course, aliases can only be used by VIPs, most of whom pay for it, and Admin has no desire to risk offending a paying customer unless circumstances are really dire. Therefore the Mod's refrain is we all need to lighten up and get thicker skins because they don't want to inhibit free expression.
I call Bullshit. The Mods have the power to moderate and unmoderate posters. If the poster is unmoderated, his alias postings are also unmoderated. So it's simple. If a poster starts using aliases to be an asshole rather than for one of the nine permissible reasons, moderate his ass. Then hold his aliases. but only his aliases, to a higher standard of civility, say, what people would consider civil when speaking face to face. More work for the Mods? Yup. But word will get out quickly, the abuse of aliases will diminish rapidly, and there will be less aggravation all around. If the guy wants to say something badly enough he is free to say it under his TER ID. Free expression is not inhibited. And we will very quickly find out if there is really no difference because "they're all just aliases anyway." Go ahead, use your TER ID to call Cate a drunk, then try to book a date with her using your TER ID. Good luck with that.
