Some of my favorite trendy finds:
Chartreuse Kitchen: Located by the DIA. Really great for lunch, or a small plates style dinner. Plus you get to sip on green cocktails.
Flowers of Vietnam: Unique restaurant in southwest Detroit. Featured on NPR, you'll need a reservation.
People fawn over the Selden Standard, but I think they are overrated.
Ima: Award winning Japanese influenced noodle bar from Ann Arbor. Just opened up a Detroit location.
Bakersfield: Mexican street food (tacos), has locations throughout the midwest.
Seva: Vegetarian/vegan food the nonveggie can get behind.
Bar Food:
Honest John's does a great brunch. Or really any time of the day.
Green Dot Stables: If you want every kind of slider imaginable (yes they have vegan options).
Some of my favorite hidden gems:
Dearborn may be known for its middle eastern food, but Hamtramck is full of wonderful eats! Restaurants and markets galore. There are thriving Yemeni and Bengali populations, as well as eastern european (ever been to a Bosnian restaurant?), and of course the classic polish restaurants. My favorite places in Hamtramck are Yemen Cafe, Kabob House and Mouchak Sweets (I've only ever ordered food here), and Boostan Cafe.
Oh! And I can't forget to mention Coney! Coney Island is a type of restaurant in the Detroit area, kind of like a diner. They serve breakfast all day, coney dogs, typical diner food--and usually some sort of Mediterranean/greek food. There is the classic 'Lafayette v American' debate (I stan Lafayette), but imo the best coneys are Parkside Coney Island in Highland Park and Maine Street Coney Island in Hamtramck. If you don't want to venture out, I'm sure both are available on delivery apps.
Pizza:
For classic Detroit style pan pizza, try Buddy's (has metro location). Honestly, Jet's does a good pan pizza too though.
If you like funky pizza, Pi Sci in Woodbridge is for you. Lots of vegan options too (they make their own vegan cheese, and have a variety of interesting meat substitutes).
