Need info on renting a house in Tijuana -- preferrably in a safe neighborhood near La Zona

I was on JuansTijuana.com and found some good info about living conditions and prices, but I did not find availability for a house with a backyard. Also, I wanted to bring this topic over to the TER board.

As I told TJ500, I will be working in San Diego next fall (2005).  I plan to live in Tijuana if I can find acceptable accomodations.
I need a house with a backyard because I have a dog and I want to host bbq parties down there.

I am hoping the cost of living in TJ is much cheaper than San Diego, because if the difference is not sufficient, I would rather live closer to work.

Hi Rico

how have things been ?
I am glad to see you are moving down. First off do not get a place near the zona. Safe place near the zona is kind of an oxymoron. try a little ways away from the zona maybe near Agua Caliente which is about a 10 to 15 min drive away from the zona and you will find lots of nice places for around 350 to 500 with secure parking and room for your doggy :)

Do not have anyone from the zona help you out!
When you come down next time i will take you or show you some places to check out
take care

Hi Milky,

Doing real good, thanks.  Hope you're doing well too.  Thanks for the info.  Been emailing with Burt -- gave me some excellent info.

DOing some long term planning -- won't be living in TJ till at least Fall 2005.  Gonna go down to TJ to apply for the sentry pass beginning of April (next month).

Been on TJ Amigos -- excellent site , and its FREE!!

Take care man.

Thanks for looking out.

Peace,

Rico

You would be guaranteeing yourself one horrible, and unpredictable commute to work every morning.

Hi Rico,

Milkman's comments (as always) are very accurate.  I agree with him; if you are willing to live a little further south of the border you will probably find life more to your liking.

The comments about the time spent crossing the border are correct.  If you are serious about living in TJ then I suggest you apply for a Sentry car pass.  Do it now as the waiting list is very long.  (I mean now, the wait could be over a year.)

Milkman knows TJ better than I and can provide better  information about housing than I.  However, I am willing to help if I can.  I let my VIP lapse since I only hobbying in TJ these days (thanks to LE in San Diego) and the reviews of TJ providers have dried up on TER.  Send me an email as I have a few thoughts for you that I'll send in an email.

I know the San Diego freeways fairly well.  Let me know approximately where in San Diego you will be working and your starting hour.  I want to try giving you an idea of your commute time, among other things.

Good luck,

Burt

I live down south of the border. Actually down in Rosarito Beach, past the Fox Studios.

Been living there for 5 years now. Never had a problem. I park my two cars, my motorcycle and my kids motorcycles. Of course there is security in the complex where I live.

The rent is very reasonable. Have a nice two bedroom, two bath condo, very nicely furnished, right on the water. I'd probably be paying at least two or three times the rent on this side of the border.

Regarding the border crossing, it depends on what time of day you are planning on crossing the border.

99% of the time I commute on the motorcycle, so the wait is negligble. But when I do have to take my car, if you get to the line at about 8:30 AM you can count on the average 30 minutes. Earlier then that, the lines are much, much longer.

Hope this helps you out a bit.
