No idea why, but the line snaked all the way back under the bridge into the little park area. Got in line at 11:45 and to my car at 2:15.
To add insult to injury, even though it was about 2pm when I parked there on Friday, the bastards at the parking lot insisted on charging me an extra day's rate ($9) for the 15 minutes. Told him he'd just lost a loyal customer who had spent thousands of dollars parking there over the years (if you consider 25-30 trips a year, for a ten-year period...) Typical short-term thinking in some businessmen's heads. I guess he figured enough people will show up for those parking spots to make up for it.
The military gets paid on the 1st and 15th and maybe one day before those dates. It all depends what day of the week they land on. Your best bet to go is at least 4 days before these days. 26, 27, 28, and 29th or 10, 11, 12, and 13th.
The line I was in yesterday (7/20) was as long as the one you were in but it took me one hour and forty minutes. I got in line at 4 p.m. I don't think military people getting paid on the 1st and 15th has anything to do with the line being long. It's summer and there are toursits. The line is rarely this long during other seasons. I have seen lines this long only during summer and it could be any day.
Every year the line is terrible when school is out and people on both sides of the border vacation. The Christmas shopping season is another time it's also bad.
One of the main reasons I've only been to TJ a few times since I began to hobby five years ago is the unpredictability of the wait time in line. I’ve had a great time with the ladies I’ve met there but I hobby 1-2 times per month and plan the details very carefully for my entertainment so time is an important commodity. As for me when I do go to TJ I park near the trolley station and take the trolley there.
