I disagree with Burt about Purple Rain.
First, it is a very short two blocks from Adelitas/HK to Purple Rain. There are police all over the place in the area. Of course it's possible to run across something shady along the way, but it's just as likely to get ripped off any place in the area. I've done that walk more times than I could count and have never had anything close to a problem, other than being hassled by someone wanting to walk with me to the place where I was already going so they could get a tip when we got there. Actually, if you are really concerned about being troubled, get one of these guys to walk with you. It's a non-issue as far as I'm concerned. But if this really worries you, you can get an escort [of another kind] to walk you the two blocks. You will see that there are ten year olds running up and down the street in the area. The idea that this is some seriously dangerous block to walk is kind of laughable to me. If this block is too dangerous for you, then you should not be making this trip at all.
Second, while it is true that the girls at Purple Rain are not, on average, the hottest to be found, there is always at least one who is hot. Some girls prefer it because it is not the overwhelming meat market slam-bam noisery that you will find at HK or Adelitas. Relative to those places, it is quiet and almost relaxing. It is easier and less of a hassle to get a room. You will not have some punk bang on the door telling you your time is up, as you will at the hotels next to HK and Adelitas. While not exactly pristine and elegant, it isnt the utter slime that the hotels near HK and Adelitas all are. It is not nice. It just isnt the same level of repulsive as the others.
Bottom line: if you wanna get away form the noise and sleeze that can get overwhelming down the street, Purple Rain is an option that is nearby. If you find a girl you like, you can often have a nicer time in a less oppressive scene than you can find at HK or Adelitas.

Never been to or heard about purple rain, but I've been to HK a few times. Like Burt said, I think you can find the hottest girls there. However, starting Thursday, but more so Friday and Saturday, it can get pretty packed so all the hot girls are usually doing multiple trips to the rooms. So if you find a hottie, and don't mind sloppy 23rd's, grab her fast or else someone else will.
Also, some of the hotter girls will make you buy them "fichas". It's a drink (either water or beer, or water in a beer bottle) for the ladies. It's usually $5-$6, and they get to keep some of the profit. So some girls will milk a few fichas out of you before letting you take them up. The usual price is about $80.
There are some other bars, like Adelitas, Chicago, and a few others on the same block that have decent looking girls (6-8's on a scale on 1-10) who will only charge $60. However, if you want the 10's and the porn star lookalikes, go to HK.
TJ is an amazing place to be. No matter where you go, I'm sure you will have a blast.
