He did ask where I lived and what I did.  He also wanted to know if I was at Caliente (I was crossing over the walkway from the yellow cabs to the other side).  He did a full search of all jeans pockets, coat pockets, socks, etc.  He was looking for just one viagra that he could use to get a bribe.  I was pleasant and he let me go without much hassle, but the searches are getting to be routine again.  If you're going to bring something back, you should probably drive over during the day and back across before nightfall.

Seems there's a higher than normal Police presence in TJ lately.

If you happen to get stopped, be polite and courteous. Do not over indulge with alcohol. If you happen to get stopped by a corrupt cop and he wants a bribe, you can just pay the guy and it's easy or just demand to be taken to the Police station and talk to the Police Officer in charge.
If the corrupt cop sees that you won't offer up a bribe, he should let you do.

If you happen to get stopped and searched, be polite, answer all questions and you should be let go, on your way to where you were going.
Cops will ask you what type of job you have in the US. If you have a great paying job, you may lie since you don't know if the cop is legit or corrupt until they talk about a fine being paid on the spot.

be careful out there

There are also a lot of auto check points these days.  The primary cause is the drug cartel violance.

These things run is cycles.  RH gives some good advice; let me add to it.  If searched (cops have the right) hold your money and wallet in your hands.  Be polite, but don't show fear.  Learn how to say sindicatura (internal affairs).  It sometimes has a "magical" effect on corrupt cops.

I haven't been to the clubs in a few years, because of a real GF there, and I cross a couple times a week.

There has been an explosion of kidnappings, violence, etc down there.  Hasn't deterred me, but I would say this is not the best time for a noobie to be wandering around.
