I'm a big rum fan -- just realized that some of the TJ liquor stores sell Cuban rum -- the Havana Club brand is supposed to be excellent. When I crossed the border today on the way home from a great rendevous with Lara (review pending...), I asked the Customs guys what the rules are re: Cuban rum. Turns out you can bring back 1 liter no problem.
So...where are the best liquor prices in TJ? Relatively close to the border crossing would be a BIG plus.
A rule of thumb for shopping in TJ is the further away you are from the border and tourist locations (Revolucion), the better the prices. I'm not familiar with Havana Club; is that something banned from sale in the US?
Yeah -- it's made in Cuba so subject to the embargo and cannot be sold in the U.S. (although you're allowed to bring one liter across the border for personal consumption). It's supposed to be very good, especially the 7-year "anejo." I found a bottle at a store right at the border for $35 -- I'm sure there are much better deals elsewhere in TJ.
