Many guys have much trouble getting away on weekends so weeknights are best alternative. No matter what day is chosen, it will always pose some problems for some of us. Earlier in the afternoon also poses problems getting away from work early also.

Things usually get going 45 min-1 hour after the announced start time. Starting at 5 00 PM or so would enable an 8 or 9 PM departure, home by 10.
Starting at 7 PM means that the party usually begins near 8 PM. Stay 2+ hours, then an hour more to get home at 11 or later. Too many associated difficulties.
