Lotions tend to dry out quickly and leave a residue.

There are good massage techniques that don't require any lotion or oil:

Feather massage, deep pressure point and one that I really love:  You take a warm bare moist terry cloth towel and place it over the back, then squeeze the towel by grabbing bunches of it along with the flesh along the sides moving from neck to lower back and then back up.  It is beyond heavenly.

My favorite K gal taught me that one but she's been AWOL for over a year, alas.

I like lube, but nothing warming or cooling for me thanks. Imo, lube should lubricated. Your hand should do the warming

i use lube or the massage oil for the HJ portion... or spit.

When I do it myself I have never used any kind of lube. No it is not painful. Now spit, are saliva are acceptable lubes, as I love my BBBJ, but completely dry works foe me.

I like to mix oil/lotion gets just enough glide without feeling greasy or sticky.

Lube is the best, lotion a fair substitute.
