Hi ya'll, can anyone (or more) recommend a really good seafood restaurant that is more on the casual side? I'm already doing the Little Italy thing one night an I'd love to do the seafood thang my last night.
Either go to Lobo's, Thames or One Eyed Mikes, they are not in the Inner harbor but in Fells point about 5 mins or less drive, or a 15-20 min or so walk. Forget overpriced mediocre tourist traps in the harbor.
Personally this place has the best crab cakes if you ask me. Although I am not from MD, I tour there and just started going to the DMV area a lot more frequently. I feel like this place has something for everyone. The website link is below, enjoy The food was great.
Not sure of the direction you're going in but if this clears it up for you I'll explain so that you could have a better understanding. My comment says " use yelp as well" as well = in addition/ also I was letting her know to check that site as well for recommendations for "extra" help
As you just said I also posted for recommendations actually pretty often in a lot of cities I have been to lol, the one you linked was in January. A client referred me to yelp although I knew about it I just started using yelp as of last week and wow was it helpful so it is a new found love. That is why I posted about yelp. It was basically just sharing information to help or I wouldn't have responded to this topic. I found out how helpful yelp was very recent so I shared. If you look up you will see I also posted a actual recommendation just now/ few mins ago. I didn't notice your post at first so sorry for the delay in responding lol, I was on "Flat mode" . XOXO Have a lovely day
And you have a lovely day too There are always tons of sites on where to eat and what to do.. Trip advisor, yelp.. But communication on the ter message board are fun because we are a like minded community. If you want crabs, there are great places in Dundalk. If you want oysters, try Fells Point.
That true statement lol, TER is such a fun community with like minded people. You see me on the boards often chiming in, I love it lol. I check everything when traveling.... TER, trip advisor and now yelp. I go through about 4- 5 sites especially when traveling far and trying to line up the perfect dining option.
Speaking of restaurants I am dying to try Luna Del Sea Steak & Seafood Bistro. The reviews are amazing maybe next time lol
You are probably the only person to ever say that Phillips has the best crab cakes. That place flat out sucks and is a bigger version of Red Lobster.

I enjoyed it. The place itself didn't blow me away of course but it was decent with a little something for everyone lol. When it comes to crab cakes that's what I liked. It could be because I haven't explored other options near inner harbor yet but they certainly have better crab cakes then where I live so that's what I compared it to but that's another story lol. I also seen it mentioned on a few other boards so I went. Reviews were pretty good. I'm sure some others will list some places as well.
When I was living in New Jersey.. I was with friends in Chicago. We told the front desk lady that we came from New Jersey and we're going to try out their best pizza in town.. She says, oh.. That's great! I said yup.. Chuck e cheese!!!!
She gave me a side eye and we just laughed. Haha. Phillips puts a lot of filler in their crab. Some people like that. A true Maryland crabcake should have the least amount of filler possible. Crab tastes so great on its own.. When things are added, it takes away from the natural taste. I only drink water when I have good crab cakes. That's how great a good crab cake taste! Unfortunately most places aren't downtown.. You have to go outside of the city to find them. Pappas gets my vote.
My mother actually travels to Baltimore just for seafood. I remember her coming back telling us about everything she ate. Hands down Maryland is the best state for seafood.
Maryland seafood cannot be found in the Inner Harbor....

Reviews.....I don't take any reviews on food places seriously. Especially YELP. Generally when a restaurant gets a few bad reviews management has employees and their friend create fictitious reviews to help bolster business.
Besides, I just looked at their menu although I know it, It is a SIN to FRY a crab cake in Maryland in my honest opinion. Maryland crab cakes are broiled.

Phillips crab cakes are good to me but I only had it once. Maryland is known for seafood in general but this thread is helpful because all crab cakes I had were fried so now I have to try a boiled one.
If you go Broiled.....you'll never go any other way ever again.
Crab Cakes are never to look like perfectly round cakes, they are to be a massive pile of backfin lump crab meat with a hint of filler just to bind them together. They in no way should look perfect, just that massive pile of goodness.

I went to my fav Italian fine dining my first night and on a rec on my flight down by a Maryland native that the Rusty Scupper had gotten better, I gave it a try. I was pleasantly surprised. Great crab cake appetizer (NOT fried, lol) and the grilled Mahi Mahi with lemon butter was fantastic.
And now I have many suggestions for future visits. Steph xoxo
