Let's hope 2011 sucks less than 2010

"Act as if..." If you "act as if" 2011 is going to be a great year, it will be a better year than if you "act as if" it's going to suck before it even gets hear!

The only reality is the one you make for yourself.

The first time I lost my job I'd never been unemployed in over 20 years of working.  At first, it was like a badly needed vacation to have some time off.  But after a while, I noticed I was getting used to my new lifestyle and starting to get comfortable.  I was a workaholic for many years, but in a surprisingly short amount of time, I started accepting being unemployed and found myself no longer actively pushing to get back to work and get my life back on track.

My version of what Mattradd said was a little different.  I got in the habit of asking myself everyday what was I going to do to make today better than yesterday.  I actually did it while I was looking in the mirror.  When I started having an answer to that question, things started happening again.

As luck would have it, I got laid off again earlier this year.  Only now I was too old for most businesses to hire me.  So this time around I immediately started thinking about what was I going to do for myself since I knew no company was going to hire me.  I started evaluating business ideas with a partner and we've been working on implementing one for the last few months.  We should launch in the 1st quarter of 2011, and we've done it all with very little money.

The only difference between this time and last time I was unemployed is I didn't wait around for someone to do something for me, because I learned they just won't.  Frankly, nobody gives a damn about you, so you have to give a damn about yourself.  I really hope you can appreciate what I'm saying and put it to good use.  I spent a long time feeling sorry for myself the first time I lost my job because it really was an unfair situation.  But again, nobody gives a damn, except me.  So it fell on me to take action and improve my situation.  I'm sure you can do the same in 2011.

I saw the hand-writing on the wall when I was still young. And, the handwriting said, no matter how hard you work, the company will not take care of you when it feels it can't, or it's in its best interest not to. So, I set out to develop a skill set where I could be independent of any company. Today, over 60, no one can lay me off, and I can work as much, or as little, and as long as I like. I lived like a starving artist at the beginning, but it's paid off.

P.S. Good luck on your new endeavor, and Happy New Year!

I wish I'd learned that lesson earlier in my career, because you're absolutely right.

The things that decimated my industry- intense foreign competition, severe cost cutting and excessive government regulation, are now the norm in nearly ALL industries.

So the rules of the game have dramatically changed and anybody that isn't assured of being able to retire in his current job needs to get up to speed fast on the new reality and start looking out for his own future well-being.

A lot of people are wasting time waiting for the economy to get better and things to go back to "normal" the way they used to be before the recession.  But the changing fundamentals of the economy (like our enormous debt and China's emergence) guarantee that it's never again going to be like it was even just 5 years ago.  I'm afraid millions of unemployed Americans are about to get a very unpleasant wake-up call as a result.
