for hobbying?  not sure what's stay away from.  lived in SB for 5 years in the 90's and only place that can think of that's not the best neighbrohood is the east side of Milpas, but the absolute best mexican food place is on Milpas.  bunch of nice hotels and inns around low Castillo between Carrillo and Cabrillo.  or pretty much anything on Cabrillo is nice.

try posting on the PO board. Sharing specific hotel info on the public LA board might encourage a welcoming committee you don't want to see. Have fun in SB, it's an absolutely gorgeous (but very pricey) city!! I'd love to retire there when I make my millions! :P

Just returned from SB. Love staying at Harborview Inn at the base of Stearns Wharf and Carlitas up on State Street has the BEST Mexican food in town.  Try The Palace Grill off State for terrific Cajon food.  Have fun!
