What are some good and safe areas to stay while visiting? Obviously there's a lot to do out that way, but are there any off-the-beaten-path elements of entertainment you would recommend?

Yes. San Diego.
No traffic, you can't see the air, great beaches.
I could go on.
Oh, safe areas? Anywhere the Lakers or Dodgers AREN'T playing!

for non-hobby activities you look like a chick that would like Silverlake, south Pasadena and Downtown LA.  Downtown is pretty safe if you don't go too far east.  San Pedro has a a pretty good punk scene

Wouldn't recommend it.  I've scheduled with lots of providers that come out for tours.

They all tell me that LA guys are flakes.
