A key logger is a small program that usually runs in the background, monitors your key strokes, and sends the info off to a remote server for malicious intent (usually the hacker who wrote the program).

There are also offline key loggers, so if you share the computer with someone else, they could install one and monitor your past activity next time they have access to the computer.
