If you know any not to expensive painters, can you pm me? The 2500 sq place would look brilliant in Benjamin Moore paint. I usually do painting myself but the ceilings are possibly 100 foot high?? I'll start a google search, but if you know any good painters For large spaces let me know. You know your city better then me :-)

Hello friends, I'm leaving my sublet today and must make a decision on where my location will be. I had no idea there were so many neighborhoods in LA and that each one had its own "reputation". I drove cross country, and so I assumed LA as a city was easy to get around, and had the same vibe everywhere. Since Ive been here, I've discovered a few places, but there is so much I havnt learned yet. I love the energy of Venice, but just this week found out parking can be bad. Also police cars constantly patrol Venice as well as Santa Monica. Santa Monica seems nice. I've been in Silverlake this month, and the valley people come to me. But have to say, I've not met many who came from Santa Monica or the beach.
So is that how it works here? You get your clientele based on your location in the city? And that neighborhood's reputation? I found a place in west LA that is just a 1 bedroom. Its hardly a place I can move my things into from storage, yet this is the area most people said is good to see clients. On the other hand, I found a 2500 square foot place downtown, in an area that is stereotyped as "dodgy". Seems safe enough to me and pretty old and dreamy. I wouldn't mind taking the big space with character. But will I sit there all by myself because nobody will go to the area for its "reputation"?
Hope you don't mind me asking. My brain is just in overload right now, since it's moving day and I've got two choices on location.
Thanks for your help. Love you, Cameo

You go we will follow.

But easy freeway access and parking would also be nice

Good freeway access helps a lot.
West L.A. is more centralized.
You will get some from the valley and some from
Santa Monica as well as Mid Wilshire.
Also parking there is much better.
I travel from the valley to W. L.A. regularly.

Freeway close to everywhere and unlike the Westside and beaches...free parking!

Look at Valley Village, Valley Glen, North Hollywood, Encino, Studio City, Sherman Oaks, or even as far west as Canoga Park or Woodland Hills.

Agree. Less traffic and better parking than WLA. or Hollywood. Also easy access to Pasadena and SGV. However it does get really  warm in the summer for sure. EOM

Im going to see what I can find for mid february. I drove up the 101 a bit, and it was so pretty with the hills and trees. I love being around nature. It looked a bit like Ireland in that direction... which suits me very well!

If you go with either Sherman Oaks or Studio City, the good thing about that is parking is more reasonable, and those in Beverly Hills or West LA can easily drive over the hill through the canyons.  So those land locked far from the 10 or 405 have a good option...

But yeah- LA is spread out and each area is distinctly different.  But welcome!

and you will get 10 different locations.  Most likely near their residence or near their place of employment.
But honestly, a large (over 50 unit) security apartment building will protect your anonymity, providing the tenants are younger working types.  Many buildings in Santa Monica and the Fairfax area are occupied by retiree's.  You don't want some yenta complaining to management.  It happened to a friend of mine..
City planning limits where the ideal places are.  Namely West LA,  bordering the 10 and 405 freeways, The Valley (Sherman Oaks, Studio City even some areas of North Hollywood)  and Hollywood (west of La Brea north of Sunset)
The above areas are all in the incorporated City of LA, a good thing as LE is most concerned with agencies and individual complaints.  Some of the smaller "Nice" cities, are more pro active.
Good Luck

East LA, Watts and Compton can be cheap . And you can join a family for protection.

But in my experience you are best to be within five minutes of the 405 from Marina del Rey to the 101 Freeway.  In that corridor, there are lots of two and three story apartments with available street parking.

Downtown may not be dodgy, but getting there for the guys that have the disposable income is a pain in the ass.

Just a reminder Cameo, I recall that you opined it was too hot for you in Silverlake.  If you relocate to the Valley, it will be at least 10 to 15 degrees hotter there each day in the summer compared to WLA.  Especially in Woodland Hills, low 90's in the summer is considered a cool day.

I may start looking in the valley tho. I think I can get a bigger house to fit all my antiques in once they are shipped here. I was thinking to go to Europe for the summer. So that might work out well.

I went and looked at two places today. I decided on a short term sublet in West LA, and also a downtown place because of it's larger size. I do need a big place for when my shipment of furniture arrives. I guess Ill see how I feel in both areas. But I think I'm leaning towards the Valley. I have lots of antiques and need a big house. I love gardening also. Silverlake is nice too. Right now, I'll see how the two places feel, and next month maybe try the Valley.

Your advice has been very helpful today. I was reading your comments as I was deciding on apartments, and you gave me such good helpful things to consider. Thanks and Thanks again! Love Cameo

You know you have my vote for the Valley. Encino, Sherman Oaks, Tarzana, Valley Village, all freeway close and right down the street from me! http://www.theeroticreview.com/library/style/i/emoticons/teeth_smile.gif
There would be ne'er a cloudy day, the sun would forever shine in the San Fernando Valley if Cameo were here!!

I love my midcity location and have extra safety measures here so, I'll probably Never move again. I've been here for 5 yrs now. But, If I did... my research would lead me to Sherman Oaks. I would also consider Larchmont bc its still centrally located but a hidden little jem of an area. Everyone does seem to hit the valley but it gets soo hot over there. Anyrhing Hollywoodish is just to congested I think. Just as directly in Beverly Hills area can be too.

I use to live in Venice and parking is the worst there I believe. I moved to Marina del Rey after they burnt my apt building so they could hike the rent. MDR is nice but that can also be deceiving. I make just as much $ here midcity as I did in MDR but all things including how I screen are different now too, so really hard to truely compare.

My experience is sometimes the so called "posh" area aren't worth their costs. There are some real nice hidden jem areas. My area (midcity) has been up and coming for past 10 yrs. I have great views of the city and sunsets.

Hope that helps with your survey.

Being near freeway exits whereever you choose is a good idea.

Larchmont is gorgeous! If a house came up there, I might be tempted!
I'm not familiar with mid city. I'll try to find where that's at

But I find interesting and unique energy everywhere. I actually like downtown better at night. It feels like the clock is turned back and I'm observing  history. It's so quiet and shadows dance. I like it. But then again, I like almost everywhere I go :-)
