Apparently, male penguins have some difficulty being able to tell the difference between a living penguin and a dead one:

I've met some girls in my life who were not awesome, but I've never had any difficulty knowing that someone was still alive!

Female penguins must be really, really bad in the performance category!

Of course, if a particular penguin was really hot*, I guess her performance would not stop her from getting good reviews!

*yeah, i know, "hot penguin," kinda contradictory

to make sure your partner is alive so you don't waste a load.  Those who did not take the time did not reproduce as much and voila, foreplay is introduced.    Yeah, I know, yuck, who wants to think of it that way.  Could not resist though.
