place in LA to volunteer?

I'm looking for a place where I can volunteer some time for sex worker rights in the LA area, but after looking on the web the only things I'm finding are either outdated or are more about removing people from the industry.  I have (some) legal background and would like to apply those skills someplace if anyone knows of one.  Thanks

Additionally you might contact the *awesome* St. James Infirmary in SF- a health clinic by and for sex workers. Also, huge kudos to you. I wish more clients would stand in solidarity with and advocate for us as well as engaging in the hobby.

I was intrigued by your post Harlowe, so I clicked on the link. Unfortunately, it appears it, too, has not been updated in some time (monthly meeting dates are from 2012, and the blog only runs through March 2012).

If anyone knows if this organization is still active (and maybe 'anyone' includes you, Harlowe), please let us know. I am sure there are a number of us who'd be interested in assisting in some way with their mission.

And if they are still around and active, then someone needs to kick them in the butt and tell them to update the website - or maybe they need a volunteer for that. (Perhaps that's an opportunity for someone on this board?)

All the best, and a happy Memorial Day to all our vets.

I was at the last event which was a vigil for the sex workers that had been murdered or died while a sex worker. Sadly there was only 4 of us that showed up for it. I think that was last summer or fall. The lady that was running it had some personal life issue's to deal with and there was a temporary lady at the vigil that had requested to do something for the sex workers that had passed. SWOP is a lot more active in other areas. Hopefully our LA chapter will get going again sometime soon.

Have a relaxing and Safe Memorial Weekend!

I am unfortunately at max capacity with a million other community organizing commitments so I have not kept up with SWOP, but I was hoping they had figured out some of their challenges... Nightfalle, I do know the woman in charge (unless leadership has shifted again), so please feel free to message me for contact info. As Ms. Adora Cash said- other chapters are far better organized/effective, especially bay area SWOP. In the meantime, the St. James Infirmary in SF, the Red Umbrella Project in NYC, the Desiree Alliance & conference in Vegas, and the CatalystCon sex positivity conference both in LA and DC seem to be the loudest and most impactful sex worker rights/issues orgs at the moment. Sorry I cannot be of more help regarding Los Angeles.

Thanks for the tip!

I looked a little at SWOP LA a little earlier and the website/twitter seemed like it wasn't getting updated?  Facebook seems more current but without a lot of ways to get involved, mail to the address given on the site comes back undeliverable :(

I'll try messaging on facebook, and see how that goes, but in any event I appreciate the helpful reply!  :)

Wow this took a LONG time to post, sorry for it's lack of responsiveness.  Thanks for all the info, I'll keep looking, I doubt I can do much with SF, but maybe if they have an outlet or some such

you could also try speaking with an awesome lawyer in LA who is involved in sex worker rights advocacy and see if she can direct you anywhere- her name is Alana Chazen, link below. Good luck & thanks again!!

That sounds like it might be up my alley, but no link?
