Good for you!

Don\'t you feel EMPOWERED?

So I ordered an item on ebay and I think I may be getting ripped off... the seller sent me an email saying the winning bidder no longer wanted the item, so did I want it. Mind you, I was the winning bidder who paid thru paypal. Seller said they were in Oklahoma or someplace like that and payment went out of the country, of course. I have not heard anything further from the seller, which is worrying me.

I know paypal is NOTORIOUS for not refunding your money in the event of a bad transaction (their agreement says they only do so when they can get funds back- good luck), so I am wondering if I will be able to just cancel funds thru my bank. Can I just do a stop payment on electronic payment?

Several Questions here, how did you make your payment, did you check the sellers feedback, have you contacted the seller and Ebay, and what type of item did you buy?

If you paid through Paypal, chances are good you can get your money back.

I buy and sell extensively and have not had any issues there.

Paid by paypal, was a new seller listed as being in the midwest (tho it appears the payment went out of the country), but figured with ebay's fraud protection they keep advertising, I'd be good. (Possibly a dumb move, I guess.)

The payment has not yet posted to my account, but when it does I'm going to try to stop the payment thru my bank. I've emailed 9 times to the seller and nothing, no response. Next step beyond that is reporting the seller, although I already made ebay aware of the email message I received.

Check the e-mail you got from the "seller", and compare that to the info from e-bay. If you used the link the "seller" gave you, you might have got ripped off.

I only pay with paypal through the link provided through e-bay. that way, I know that the correct seller is being paid. Does e-bay show the auction as being paid? If not, you may have paid the wrong person.

Also, when I pay through paypal, I always use a credit card for payment. That way, I have charge-back protection through my credit card. If you paid through withdrawal from your bank account, you might be able to stop the ACH, but you only have a day or two to accomplish that. Paypal takes the money pretty quickly. It sounds like you are well past that deadline.

Non receipt is about the only reason that paypal will resolve a dispute in your favor. Make sure you follow the dispute process and timings to the letter. You can also file a grievance through e-bay.

Finally, request the Seller Contact info from Ebay. I think that is done through the advanced search option, search for seller.

PM me the auction number, and I'll let you know what I see.

I used to trade on ebay quite a bit, but had a seller rip me off. He had great feedback up to the purchase I made then he had six negative in a row and was eventually suspended by ebay. The other buyers and I started to email back and forth and found out he had been able to give himself positive feedback through other ebay accounts he had. I used paypal and after months, I got about $50.00 of my $150 purchase back. Paypal does not really protect the buyer at all if you read the fine print. I also had a ton of attempts to take over my ebay account, and a lot of fake ebay and paypal pages with second chance offers, all fraud, which sounds like what happened to you. I have gone over to just dealing in craigslist. It seems a lot safer to me.

I paid via ebay's link and it lists me as being paid.

A look at my bank account reveals that it has not yet posted, but when it does, I can stop payment then (according to the bank lady when I called.)

I've taken some time to look into it since posting and I'm pretty sure it's a scam the seller has going, but either way, I'm determined to get my money back.

Call Ebay and tell them what is going on.

I emailed ebay that the seller was trying to pull this and they delisted them and refunded my money (since it was under $200 and a transaction made via paypal.)

This is the first POSITIVE experience I've had with ebay/ paypal doing something to help when a seller is shady.

I was pleasantly surprised.

I was in the same situation with ebay, someone ripped me off, and paypal didn't do squat. So I called my credit card company and they reversed the charges. I thought that was the end of it, but paypal sent a collection agency after me and screwed up my credit score. PayPal sucks. All they care about is that they get their money.
