I've read over and over here "a lawyer friend told me..."
Here is some very simple and precise advice (that I think even MrFisher will agree to - although he is not an attorney).....Seek the advice of a CRIMINAL attorney who currently practices within the legal jurisdiction for which you plan to hobby. Simple. Why? This attorney KNOWS the laws within in his jurisdiction. It is his livelyhood. A patent attorney, a real estate attorney, etc., or even a general practictioner for that matter, LIKELY, wont know the specific laws required for safe hobbying. Unless, by some coincidence, he himself is a SAFE hobbyist within the LE jurisdiciton you plan to hobby. By "safe" I mean, he's taken the time to look up the laws pertaining to his specific jurisdiction.
The price of 1 hour with a criminal attorney far out weighs the devistation of ignorance.

when I read that a laywer friend (probably someone who looks at contracts all day) tells them "just ask if he/she is a cop, they have to tell you or it's entrapment." It makes my stomach cringe thinking about how many nice people are feeling comfortable, or even safe, on poor, unqualified legal advice. ESQ does not = Has all the answers. I wish I could do more. The problem with this approach is that lawyers can only tell you how to stay within the law, not how to get away with breaking it. If you're planning to engage in illegal activities and want to reduce your exposure (no pun intended), a lawyer may not be the best person to ask.

I haven't kept up with cathyb's saga, but I hope she doesn't turn out like wannarider - who was arrested for murdering a client, iirc, though I have no idea what happened with her case.
