How do you find local lawyer?

I am a hobbyist and in several messages on this board, it says that "if you get caught, try to hire the best and the most expensive lawyer who takes cases of hobbyists".

So my questions are .... 1) How do you find / know who is the best local lawyer? 2) After you get caught, do you have enough time to do this research? I am in Northern California (south bay area)and NO ... I am not in trouble but (taking a leaf from our beloved president) I am doing pre-emptive research :-D

Thanks to all who care to help !!

Contact the BAR Association for your county.  They will provide referrals to attorneys who specialize in the type of law you require.  The lawyer will usually provide a free 30 minute consultation.

Also check for ads in your local Adult mags/newspapers for attorneys who specialize in areas that affect hobbyists and providers.

There are local chapters of bar groups in your area, Berkeley for instance...there is an American Inn of Court associated with Boalt.  Find out who is the President of the Inn, the President of the Defense Bar find out who was the past President of the Alameda County Bar, go on the internet for local lawyers and then check them out in Martindale and Hubble..Call the trial court clerks office and find out when criminal motions in major felony cases are heard, take a day off and sit in and see who commands the judge's respect or who seems to get along well with the DA.  Make an appointment, check the guy/gal out.  Tell him up front what you hobby you are into and what you can do in your area to minimize the risk...spend a few hundred..it will be money well spent...if the LE weenies decide to make life miserable again...

Respectfully, I disagree with the prior advice.  You need someone who handles lots of misdemeanors, not major felonies.  This isn't a felonious matter.  It also isn't rocket science.

The requirements are a working knowledge of the process, an ability to easily relate to the prosecuting DDA and a knack for persuading the DDA that either the evidence isn't sufficient or that this should be a lesser offense, preferably an infraction and fine.  It does not require someone like Johnny Cochran just a lawyer respected by others in the court house and court room.

Where to find him/her?  Find a lawyer - any kind - that you, personally, know, like and respect.  Ask for him/her for a referral.  Almost surely the referral will be someone like the referror.  That's your lawyer; there are many really good, sound lawyers out there for this category of work.

I Agree with rodmewell. Referral is best source.

in order to shmooze him/her and get you the best possible results.

I would never have suggested a Johnny Cochran. But the best practioners in our Court are the ones doing the major cases
and they do a bang up job on the lesser offenses because the DDA's know who they are and what they are up against.
Don't know why I find myself defending against you again, maybe we should call it our pro bono for the month...lol.

I will stand by my original advice.  The guy that does major felonies has more clout with the DA and the Deputy...that influence filters down.  Your misdemeanor expert may get great deals from the misdemeanor guys/gals who are in the lower courts, but it is the major players "upstairs" that get the nolle prosse's.  If it is actually handled by one of the associates in the firm and a deputy, so be it.  But the best deals are made at the top...

I'm afraid yours is a right answer but to another question.  The issue here is a hobbyist's concern about being busted as a john.  That is not a felony and it's easily handled by any number of practitioners who know the local ropes.  There are two questions involved: plea bargaining the offense to something other than a john bust and keeping it out of the papers.  The fine is immaterial.  Major law firms and big case lawyers do not do these cases for 3 reasons: they are beneath their fee level; beneath their interest level and because their reputation will automatically draw media attention or other unwanted publicity.
