If your friend is in socal he had better be very very careful in talking to attorneys. Lots of bottom feeders in LA will take his cash and lead him down the cherry path.
His best bet is to do as much research as he can so that he is at least as expert as he can be in the specific charges facing him. He should talk to as many trial litigators as he can without paying a fee for that consultation. There are some real good people out there that will talk to him without charge to help him decide if a business relationship would make sense. However there are more of the crooks out there that will charge him $250 for an hour of bull shit advice and scare tactics.
I hope he made the right decision.
