It's one thing to have a law professor or lawyer tell you why it's important not to talk with LE w/o representation; quite another to have a detective explain that to you...

If you get detained in a room with a prostitute, it's best advise to say nothing. There are other situations though where it's less clean cut.

A few months ago I got stopped at a DUI roadblock and the cop asked me a few questions along the lines of how am I doing, whether I was drinking or not. I answered the questions and was let go without having to go through breathalyzer. What would happen if I'd plain refuse to answer any questions?

Larry,
If the stop was at night a flashlight used by the officer to shine in your vehicle.. it has a built in breathalyzer.  Not as accurate as the real thing but gives them probable cause to test you..The tactic is to get you talking so the monitor in the flashlight can analyse the exhaled breath for alchohol.  The result is an led readout in the back end cap of the unit.

Your breath passed.  If you had refused to speak at all that would have been trouble.

But just saying anything would allow the monitor to do it's job.

I was stopped by an officer for an inspection sticker... on wife's mini-truck...  really dumb.  Of course, you are never initially told why you are stopped.  Another issue came up & I realized the officer was trying to get me to admit something I could be arrested for.  I STFU.  I was written up as a MOVING VIOLATION "did cause to be operated with defective equipment" (no sticker as required by law).  I paid the fine & considered myself lucky.
I shudaknownbetter...

That was fantastic.
I worked for criminal defense attorneys in the DC area for 5 years and I have always known to ask for an attorney.
But, be prepared.
When you refuse to cooperate, the PoPo will make it harder on you than needed.
If you are eligible for bond, they will lose your paperwork.
You will sit there until they feel better about themselves and their case.

P.S. I worked on a case full of police "the thin blue line" lies and scandal, I left before it went to trial, but this being from Va. Bch is interesting.
