I heard that it's possible to set browser, such as Firefox or IE, to prevent others to track my location. E.g., when I go to CV, it always knows my city. Does anybocy know how to prevent that?

TOR masks your IP (Internet protocol) address, which is unique to your computer. It is easily installed on firefox. It may not mask you if you download vids, Flash or the like.

Assuming you want privacy and you are not doing anything illegal, I suggest using TOR and ixquick or scroogle. Diasble flash and limit java and use tor browser because you want your cache flushed. Periodically check for a Dns link.

As always if you have a shared computer check for key logging and if you are concerned about losing your computer be sure to encrypt your system.

Privacy is a responsibility, so please consider supporting the eff, epic, scroogle, and the ACLU and contacting to your regional representatives about government privacy violations and the need to sunset the patriot act.

The fundamental survival of a democracy depends on open communication and the property and privacy rights of it's citizens.  Why should your ISP be allowed to record every site you visit and why should everything you transmit be subject to warrantless deep packet inspection?  Apparently to protect us.  But one has to ask, are we really safer if we give up our rights?

There are browser settings that prevent the site from knowing the last site you visisted, but your location is a property of your IP address. The site needs to know your IP address in order to send you back the info you requested. You can use a proxy server, such as anonymizer.com, in order to hide your IP address, but that is not a browser setting. The proxy server takes your request, and forwards it as if it was from the proxy server. Then the receiving site only sees the proxy server, and not your IP address.

Yes, that's what I need, to mask IP from others' network surveillance, esp. LE. Call me paranoic. Thanks

your location is a property of your IP address.

How does your location become a property of the IP address? I notice that I will get messages like "your local weather? that are for location at which I bought the computer; am using it at a different location now.

Can I pay cash for a computer and not provide a physical address to circumvent the whole need to hide the IP address?

Try clearing your cookies. You (or your computer vendor) might have "saved" your location once on the weather website.

No.

Note: Your IP address is what LE will use to find you.

There was a recent news item about a guy posting a threat on Craigslist. LE ask CL for the IP address of the post and the exact time of the post. CL gave it to them. LE found out the ISP of the IP address, and asked the ISP for the contact info for the account that had that IP address at that time. The ISP gave it to them. LE then went to the guys house and arrested him.

anonymizer.com deletes IP user logs after a day or so. They also refuse to disclose IP/User info with a court warrant. By the time LE gets the warrant, the information has been deleted.

The main benefit I like of anonymizer.com is that they offer an encrypted wifi link. So, if you are at a public hotspot and surfing TER, no one can sniff your connection and watch what you are doing.

That is not what is happening.  It's got nothing to do with your PC purchase.

Third parties, with the cooperation of ISPs, have mapped out where ISPs are assigning particular IP addresses.  Some times its easy because the ISP that has been given the block of IP addresses only serves some locations.  Other times it is more complicated, so occasionally wrong. But suprisingly accurate.  Think of it like how a phone number might tell you a general location. But with mobile phones that relationship is now unreliable.

Tor and the anonymizers are the solutions you want if this is your concern.  I think it is taking paranoia too far for committing a misdemeanor.
