There are fifty states, all with their own variations, and that doesn't even begin to count all the variations when you take into account the descretion that the cops, prosecutors and judges have.

This much is certain:  The typical penalty, especially if it's a first offense and you are not on probabtion or parole, is a fine, for either hobbyist or provider.

On the other hand, I knew a provider who got caught in a massage parlor and she got charged with running a house of prostitution, which is a felony.  She managed to get the charge reduced to a misdemenor, but it cost her over $10,000 in legal bills, not to mention all the lost revenue.  (She's inactive now as well because she is a legal alien and she doesn't want to get deported on top of everything else.)

Here's what all hobbyist need to know, whether newbie or veteren:  Dont get caught.  Do your due diligence, use only well reviewed providers, see only well verified clients and stay safe and away from LE.

Regardless of whether the law is strict or not, once you are nabbed, you're going to be awfully unhappy.
