Is it true that LE sits in front of random hotels to watch for Johns?

... and then when they walk out of the hotel they are snagged?

No worries about being snagged if you are headed to a fancy upscale hotel, no one is going to bother you on the way out. On the other hand, your scenario sounds like court testimony where I have hear a cop describe their surveillance of the sleazy hotels that they cruise several times a night. The cop on the beat often knows the street walkers who frequent those hotel/motels. Naturally these are places where drug and sex are transacted. LE will cruise to look for unusual activities that they can interpret as trouble. If they see something they stop and ask questions.

Do they see you go in and wait for you? Not usually, they must bust you in a money transaction with a prostitute in order to nab you and that requires a sting set up that is a little more complicated. Of course not all LE play fairly. They will however write down license numbers of cars parked at motels and then use them as a reference if something went down that night. They will ticket you on arrival or departure if you have a vehicle violation, a parking violation or failed to strap on your seat belts. This is there way of telling you to stay our of Dodge.

I would suggest you stay out of sleazy motel/hotels and dangerous apartment complexes. Your chances of experiencing earth shattering sex are small and your chance of being robbed, mugged, or crabbed are very good. Lowlifes are called lowlifes for a reason and as much as it would be nice if they had their self esteem raised by concerned social workers, in the meantime they frequent dangerous places and often commit dangerous acts.

If you are a hobbyist, you are a little more upscale and the escorts have apartments or nicert hotel accommodations and you enter to meet them, so no one see a couple. That is a little safer. Of course some of these gal/guys are sting set-ups so you have to be careful here as well. Know your town and whether it is preying on hobbyists, that is a good start.

Well reviewed providers with years of reviews are generally a safe bet right?

Oh.. I found that article about LE watching the hotel parking lots

http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2008/01/13/arresting_activity/

check it out and tell me what you think ... to me it's kind of rediculous.

as the cop says, they could have charges pressed at a later time.  The uncertainty must be a bitch.

Note also that the only one of the whole group with their head screwed on correctly is the gal.  She said that she wanted a lawyer and said nothing else.

She does however, need to change her tactics and stop staying at hotels that are so provider unfriendly.

If LE has a pretty good idea is working out of a motel (Especially the ones where the doors to the rooms face the parking lot.) ususaly because they are tipped off by the motel manager, that they will wait and approach a client as he is leaving the room and scare him into making a confession and then bust the gal on the basis of the confession.

It's a pretty good scam and only works because most clients aren't aware of their right to STFU and say nothing.

They are not thinking and don't know what to say, so they confess and bring down two birds with one stone.

I'd only add...don't tell even a little white lie to LE about what you are doing there.  A quick little lie could land you in worse trouble than actually fessing up to what happened.

Just say it was personal business that you are not going to comment further on and that you'd like to know if you are free to leave.  Repeat this until LE gets tired of hearing it or lets you leave.

Remember, if they had enough to bust you then you would already be in bracelets.

It's amazing how people lock their jail cell doors with their mouths.

The best example of all was supposedly smart business woman Martha Stewart who police believed was involved with her broker in insider trading.  She told the police a story about having had an agreement with her broker to sell off the stock in question when the price fell to a certain level.   The cops didn't buy it and she got busted not for the insider trading (And here's the kicker, those laws do not apply to the customer, they apply to the broker only!  She would have been in the clear even if she confessed to being given insider information!), but for lying to the cops!

That's why the mantra has to be:

STFU, STFU, STFU.

Go on, chant it!

Just remember an officer has the option to handcuff almost anyone they come in contact with for 'personal safety.'  Don't be overly concerned if the cops cuff you up and start questioning you.  They know many people totally melt when they feel the 'cuffs go on (most probably for the first time in their life).

Stick to not talking to them and let them berate you etc till either they charge you with whatever they were going to charge you with to begin with or let you go.

The most important thing is to remember that you will NEVER talk your way out of trouble like this.  It ain't a speeding ticket.

Thanks for reminding us of that, it is easy to forget that...

Cuffs != Arrested

Asking "Am I free to leave?" or "Am I being charged" is still worth asking while in cuffs as long as LE is still trying to talk to you.  If they are talking to someone else they are likely letting you stew hoping you'll get chatty.

Listen to your Mom's advice and speak only when spoken to and in this case only to ask one of the above questions or ID yourself, nothing else.

If they cuff you for safety reasons and you won't stop talking or acting obnoxious they could slap you with some other charge out of spite.  You're right that you can't talk your way out of an arrest but it is pretty easy to talk yourself into one. :)

In my little suburban (LA) bedroom community police have busted escorts right in the lobby from matching their photos with their ads. I always read the published police reports and it seems they grab at least a few people a week just hanging out at local hotels.

This is a great place to work and live but not such a great place to play.

I recall one lady several years ago mentioning on these boards that a friendly desk clerk told her that the police actually stopped by with a binder of photos and asked the clerk if he recognized any of the ladies as hotel guests.  Something to do with an interstate task force or other.  Don't know if this is still going on.  It was in N. Va. and no doubt a hotel frequented by providers.

I try to park closer to a "wing" exit door than the main entrance.  I note when I am with a provider which wing her room is in.

When I exit her room, I use the wing end stairwell nearest my car.  Sure, they are key card entrance only but I'm only going out!!  If her room is in the other wing (50/50 chance) I'll switch wings so that I exit at the one nearest my car.  Even though I use a cane, it is not too difficult to go DOWN stairs I would struggle to climb.

I cut the lobby traffic and confuse anyone watching.

It's not happened yet but WORST case, I'd go out the wrong wing.  IF that ever happens, I'll walk all the way arround the back of the building to reach my vehicle.
