Many, if not all states, have ethical rules that limit an attorney having a sexual relationship with a client.

If by "check fraud" you mean a bad check, if the check was written for a legal transaction, your local police department probably has a "bad check" team and may be able to help you.

However, the fact that you have two reviews would be an indication you are new to this business and you may not want to draw attention to yourself.  

Lesson: do not take checks.

it's unlikely that your check is large enough to be worth chasing.  Sad but true.  People I know think writing a letter is useless, because if he was afraid of that, he wouldn't be bouncing a check in the 1st place.  And collecting generally is an UNBELIEVABLE PITA.   People I know say, look, for anything under $5K its not really worth doing more than recording an abstract, unless you know EXACTLY where and how to yank his balls off already.

The other thing is, it's a ticking bomb.  It's almost impossible to avoid discussion of what the check was FOR, and not too many judges are the wink-wink-nudge-nudge mindset.  If you rat him out to his wife, it could blow up in your face - she might cut his throat, but just as likely to cut yours next.

Some states have penalties for bouncing checks, but again, you get into the facts of the matter, and it's just a ticking bomb.

Collections usually go hourly, or if you can talk somebody into contingency, it's 50% with a lower limit - most people won't touch anything that isn't 4 figures.  People I know might work for free for Catherine Deneuve, but only if she was their GF and they could have her anytime, at will.   It's really that much trouble.

It's conceivable, though I would never suggest it, that you might have more luck finding a collections agent in the local biker bar.
