and not an escort with a divorce, probate or other problem - then you want a CRIMINAL DEFENSE lawyer.   Your point of getting personal referrals is good, but has its limits - laymen have no way of judging how hard it was to get the results they got, and it could be that the lawyer with the good batting average is just refusing difficult cases.
