Sign up for Google Analytics - it is great, shows you where they come from geographically, how many unique visitors, what ISP they use, lots of other info.  see http://www.google.com/analytics/features.html

best of all its free

I'm not a total geek or a lawyer  but I found that Most site hosts offer this service for free .
they(hosts, LE ect. always collect info if you like it or not.
ISP tracking  doesn't matter when it comes to hit counting because that usually means 8 of 10 hits just leads to some server location instead & not someones actual PC location or name . Email IP tracking is a totally different subject & much more effective if you need to verify someones true source .
Even then theres IP changers, hide IP all kinds of other sneaky ways for LE or a rob to snag you if they really wanted to do so.
I think it's borderline illegal though to hack your customers info without permission so I wouldn't make it known.
Since you were already busted, they now have all the right to harass you at random Through email phone Anything they feel like.
sorry that happened.

Yes,
you'll want software that will Track down to an IP Address.
someone mentioned Google analytics, this is good.

Your hosting provider should offer you Logs of "visitors" that would include an IP Address.

or...
http://www.statcounter.com/
(easy to install, "template code" for your website).

However, if the LE have 1/2 a brain, they are probably using false IP's anyway....

It's called Onion routing....

A Popular way to do this is through:

TOR:
http://www.torproject.org/

When you surf using this, YOU CANNOT be tracked, however NEVER use this to send CC info or other "sensitive" information as you are going through a "proxy" service.

In a nutshell, a "proxy" is like a middle man. So let's say you are person "A" you want to have a conversation with person "C".  You use TOR to talk to person "B" to then talk to person “C” to do that.

It's kind of funny. Depending on which IP address the service gives you, you might end up with an IP from Russia, so whenever you pull up Google, it's in Russian, etc.....

ALWAYS!! use TOR if you want to be 100% anonymous when you are surfing/viewing a site, etc.....
(of course with cleared out cookies, etc.)
