Heidi Fless was never punished for the prostitution ring even though it was known she was in trouble with the IRS for tax evasion this is what she did time for.  In regard to the money she made from the business, no one talked so they had no evidence against her with the business itself that is why they brought down the feds on her because where the police can't get you uncle Sam will.

I think 12 years is pretty excessive? How come people like Heidi Fless got like one or two years , while they got over a decade of sentencing?>

The charges against the pimp were many more than against Heidi, she operated in California, did not have a former criminal record for various other activities, was not a con man, I don't recall her being hit for money laundering although her dad was doing the same with her profits, she did not forse sex upon those who worked for her,  etc. Plus she had a good attorney. As for the pimp, he agreed to the guilty charges, was off and on, is already in appeal, forsed girls to qualify by having sex with him, and had a wife in the mix as well who pretty much got off. Often a defendant will accept more when the prosecutor goes easy on the wife. With good behavior this creep will be back on the street before you know it and back in business. The law goes harder on pimps then on madams as a rule although it is a bit of sexual discrimination. That being said, we just had a California case of murder of a wife and dog and the guy only got 16 years, maybe because he was and ex LE guy...  If you want justice stay out of the courts!
One final thought, the attorney for the defendant was offering excuses for his behavior, Judges want contrition, not excuses.

I never discussed her case, however she was sentenced for sex related crimes as well as tax evasion, see linkhttp://articles.chicagotribune.com/1995-05-25/news/9505250150_1_call-girl-ring-heidi-fleiss-paul-fleiss
