A New Business is Opening

Here in Las Vegas (Henderson to be exact, near where I live) a new hair styling salon is opening.  It's named "Sport Clips" and it advertises itself as "for guys only" with "no girl talk allowed."  TV's will be inside, and tuned to nothing but sports.

Haven't we come full circle here?  Didn't there use to be all kinds of places like this?  They were called BARBER SHOPS!  Women had "beauty parlors" and men had "barber shops."

Back when I was growing up in the late '60's/early '70's I used to get my hair cut at a barber shop (striped pole out front and everything).  The barber would say "what type of cut for you today" and I would answer "regular."  The cost was $2.  Magazines available to read while waiting were Sport and Field & Stream.  There was no TV, but there was a radio, and if in season it was tuned to a baseball game.  The barbers had tatoos, but they said "U.S. Navy" (or another branch of the service) nothing like tatoos of today.  The barbers would give shaves with a straight razor, and I would look forward to the day when I could get a shave from a barber.

My, how things have changed.  I'm fortunate enough at age 42 to have a full head of hair, but it's not cut by a barber.  The stylist that cuts my hair is a woman, I go to a salon where all the stylists are women except one, and he's obviously and openly gay.  The salon's customers include many of the girls who dance at the famous strip clubs here in Las Vegas, and they speak frankly about the tips they make.  (On my last visit there was a stripper getting her hair done, and let me tell you, if she also escorted I would be first in line!)

Sometimes I miss the old barber shop.  I wonder if this Sport Clips is an attempt to bring it back.

Didn't there used to be a salon/barbershop in Vegas that had topless hair stylus's? I think it closed. Too bad.

I remember those days but if it hadn't been for the "beauty salon" I go to I never would haave met my stylist a,  6'0, statuesque redhead.

...it was called "A Little Off the Top."  I never went there, it closed before I moved to Las Vegas.  However, the woman that currently cuts my hair used to work there!  (That's how I know about it.)
