Stayed there many times when it was the delano and it's a convenient location if you're going to Allegiant.  The Mandalay Bay casino is also a short walk.  But you'll need to meet your visitor in the lobby as a keycard is required.  Last time I stayed there I got an upgrade ($20 tip at check-in) to a very nice room with a very nice wraparound view from the master bedroom.  Met my visitor downstairs at the bar (Franklin i think?) for pre-drinks, and she was very impressed with the upgraded room.

Any opinion about the W hotel? Looks nice but seems out of the way. I know there is no casino. How is it for hobbying i.e. security etc? thanks!

Originally it was the hotel at Mandalay bay, then it was the delano, now its the w LOL the decor hasn't changed. It's a good hotel, but yes you will need to meet your provider down at the elevator as an active key card is required in the elevator. But there is a bar right there or I just wait right at the elevator

But it's def not walking distance to main part of the strip.

...but the rooms were too fancy/too much white for me, and the hallways felt REALLY dark. Loved the common/lobby spaces, and there were no real issues. But it wasn't my taste, and I wouldn't do it again.
